Suggestopedia (or Suggesto-pedagogy), created in Bulgaria under the influence of a psychiatrist, Dr. LOZANOV, is a method to suggest and even more desuggest of very great efficiency, particularly on the level of memorisation, as well as on the level of the development of the well-being of the student.

Whereas teaching is traditionally applied to the left hemisphere, Suggestopedia also activates the right hemisphere, finding that this association eliminates intellectual fatigue and results in increased efficiency.

A quick, efficient and pleasant method of learning

The amount of linguistic material presented in a shorter time is extremely important. Owing to a very specific technique it is possible to achieve a very good standard of memorisation and ease in the use of the language at the end of the month.

At the end of a suggestopedic course, the wish to continue in the practice of the target-language (listening radio programmes, films, reading, meetings, perfecting, travel…) is remarkable.

Certain pieces of classical music have been selected for their ability to induce alpha waves in the brain. These waves correspond to a state of total relaxation. It is with this musical background (right hemisphere) that the new linguistic material (left hemisphere) is introduced to the students while they are settled in armchairs, completely relaxed and receptive. Those chosen pieces of music lead the students in a sophronic state and have also the great power to open the internal ear in order to lesson to phonetic specific sounds and to be able to pronounce them correctly with a good pronunciation and accent.

Entertaining games , sketches, etc, drawn from concrete situations in daily life are carefully selected to act on the emotion, the imagination, the mental activity and the thought, stimulating all kinds of intelligences and creating the second plan of learning according to Dr LOZANOV.

These are some important methods used in Suggestopedia. But its main strength lies essentially in the harmonious synthesis which it evokes along with the techniques of learning, the possibilities inherent in the method of suggestion – de-suggestion, and the positive attitude of the teacher…

No repetitive exercises, no translations, no homework, no tiredness… The student learns with pleasure in a relaxed atmosphere, while retaining a high level of motivation right to the end.

The student progresses from
all points of view

By the end of the course, the student uses the new language with pleasure and is at ease in daily life situations and conversations, even if he has not become a perfect linguist. The previous possible blockages to the oral compre-hension and expression have disap-peared. This method gives rise to the desire to continue to perfect oneself and to vitalise the personality.

The student has developed his memory and concentration. His potential is further increased by the achievement of greater social ease, a calmer nature and above all a poised confidence in his personality and in his abilities. New horizons are opened. Some students even remark the disappearance of headaches, sleep-lessness or other troubles.
